PDFixel loads the official `libheif` C++ library compiled to WebAssembly and runs it in a worker in your own browser, so a High Efficiency Image Container stream is decoded on your hardware with nothing uploaded. It handles the 12MP through 48MP photos current iPhones produce. Two limits are worth stating plainly: the PNG that comes out is 8 bits per channel, because that is what a browser canvas writes, and Apple ProRAW is a DNG file rather than HEIC, so this tool does not open those.

HEIC wraps its image data in HEVC, a patent-encumbered video codec, and that licensing is why broad native support never arrived outside Apple's own platforms. Safari on Apple hardware decodes HEIC because the system codec is already licensed there; other browsers do not ship a decoder at all. Converting is therefore not a workaround for a missing feature — it is the practical way to make an iPhone photo openable everywhere, which is exactly why a WebAssembly decoder is needed to do it in a browser.

For ordinary photographs, JPG. HEIC photos are photographic content and PNG stores that very inefficiently — expect a file several times larger with no visible benefit, because the HEIC was already lossy and PNG cannot restore what it discarded. Choose PNG when you specifically need a lossless working copy for editing, or transparency, or when a system you are uploading to accepts only PNG. Otherwise HEIC to JPG is the right tool.

Converting to PNG does not add any further loss — PNG stores exactly what the decoder produced. Two things are still worth knowing. The HEIC itself is lossy, so its own compression is baked into what you get. And HEIC can hold 10-bit colour depth, while PNG output here is 8-bit per channel, so a photo with extremely subtle gradients can show marginally less tonal precision. Neither is visible in normal viewing.
